How to Find the Perfect Carry-On Backpack for Travel

There are many different types of backpacks to choose from when shopping for a new bag.  It can get overwhelming.  Here is a list of suggestions on features to consider when shopping for a backpack.

Size

For minimalist travelling, you want to make sure it meets the size requirements to qualify as a carry-on.  The following backpack, Deuter fits all airlines requirements including strict regulators like Ryan Air.

Breathable back

Carrying a backpack can get quit hot in the summer months.  To prevent or minimize your back from getting too hot and sweaty, look for a backpack that has a back support that keeps the actual backpack off your back. This allows air to flow between you and the backpack.

Pockets

I would recommend looking for backpack that has minimal amount of pockets.  Typically the more pockets a backpack offers the more you sacrifice on efficient space for packing.  When travelling for long stretches with just a carry-on, you want to maximize the amount of space for packing without going over the carry-on size requirements.  The pockets I find the most handy are;

  • One large compartment that can be turned into two.  This is a great feature because you can start to sort your dirty clothes from your clean clothes.
  • A secret pocket where you can hide away money, passports, tickets, and other important items.
  • A pocket that fits along the back of the pack to slide in a laptop easily and remove it easily without requiring you to repack your backpack.
  • A pocket on the arm strap for carrying your cellphone.  A vary handy feature.
  • Front pocket that can carry a pair of shoes.  This is a great feature so if you are packing an extra pair of shoes, you can keep it outside of the bag so the shoes do not get packed with your clothes.  It will help keep you clothes clean.  If you don’t find the option, simply wrap your shoes in a bag and pack with your clothes.  Best to only travel with one pair but for women, I have not yet found a pair of shoes that will meet all my requirements on a trip.  I typically travel with two pairs of shoes.

Ideally you want to look for a backpack that has a large main pocket that can be turned into 2 compartments.  On your trip, this helps keep the dirty clothes from the clean clothes.

Rain Cover

A rain cover is a must have feature.  It doesn’t just protect your clothes from the weather.  It is also great for covering your back up when you need to contain the straps when flying.  If you choose to check your back, this will save your straps from being beat up on the varies conveyor belts, etc at the airport.  I’ve lost a few straps, and this item will protect your backpack.

Number of straps

There are key straps required on a bag to help make it fit properly.

  • One strap that fits across your chest
  • A strap on each arm to fit the bag closest to your body
  • A strap that adjusts the bag across your waist.

These three straps will adjust the bag to be comfortable on your back.

  • A strap to adjust the width of the bag.  This is a nice feature to have so you can adjust the width of the bag depending on the amount of space you have filled.

Fit & Comfort

Lastly, make sure your bag fits you correctly.  I highly recommend going to a store like MEC where you can try on the various backpacks and buy the one you like in the size you need.  Most of the bags MEC carry come in two to three sizes to fit each individual accurately.  The sizes are based on height.  If you are a tall person carrying a small size bag, the straps will not fit your body correctly which may result in you being uncomfortable when travelling.  When trying on  a backpack, make sure to add sample weights to the bag to get a good feel of how the bag will fit on your back when you have it packed.  Out of all the suggestions above, fit and comfort is the most important item to consider when buying a backpack.  If you are planning to carry the bag for a number of weeks on your travels, a comfortable bag will make all the difference to adding enjoyment to your trip as a minimalist traveller.

The above are the key features to consider when purchasing a backpack for travelling.  The best places to shop in Canada for a new bag are Mountain Equipment Coop (MEC) and Sail.  At these stores, they have a wide selection to select from as well as they carry each bag in two or more sizes to fit for individuals properly for height.  Most importantly, their sales staff is trained to help you get properly fitted for a bag.

Backpack Buying Guide FAQ

What should I look for when buying a travel backpack?

When buying a travel backpack, focus on five key features: carry-on size compatibility, comfort, ventilation, storage layout, and weather protection. A backpack should fit airline carry-on requirements, distribute weight comfortably through chest and waist straps, provide airflow against your back, include practical compartments for organization, and come with a rain cover for protection during travel.

What size backpack is best for travel?

For most travellers, a carry-on-sized backpack is the best choice. A backpack between 35 and 45 litres typically provides enough space for extended travel while meeting most airline carry-on restrictions. Travelling with a carry-on helps avoid checked baggage fees, reduces the risk of lost luggage, and makes moving between destinations easier.

Are travel backpacks better than suitcases?

Travel backpacks are often better than suitcases for travellers who move frequently between destinations. Backpacks are easier to carry on stairs, uneven sidewalks, public transportation, and cobblestone streets. Suitcases may be more convenient for business travel or trips where you stay in one location for an extended period.

Why is a breathable back panel important?

A breathable back panel creates space between your back and the backpack, allowing air to circulate. This reduces heat buildup and sweat, making the backpack more comfortable during warm-weather travel, hiking, and long walking days.

How many compartments should a travel backpack have?

The best travel backpacks balance organization with packing efficiency. Too many compartments can reduce usable packing space. Most travellers benefit from a large main compartment, a laptop sleeve, a secure pocket for valuables, and a small external pocket for frequently used items.

Is a rain cover necessary for a travel backpack?

Yes. A rain cover protects your belongings from rain and can also help shield backpack straps from damage during flights or when checking luggage. Even if your backpack is water-resistant, a rain cover provides an extra layer of protection during unpredictable weather.

How should a travel backpack fit?

A travel backpack should fit your torso length and body size. The shoulder straps, chest strap, and hip belt should work together to distribute weight evenly across your body. Before purchasing, try the backpack with weight inside to ensure it remains comfortable when fully packed.

What is the most important feature in a travel backpack?

Comfort and fit are the most important features in a travel backpack. Even a backpack with excellent storage and features can become uncomfortable if it does not fit properly. A well-fitted backpack reduces strain on your shoulders and back, making long-term travel significantly more enjoyable.

Happy travelling!
