The Complete 7-Day Belize Itinerary for Families: Beaches, Reefs & Adventure

This Belize itinerary highlights easy logistics, outdoor adventures, and cultural experiences, emphasizing lightweight travel for a relaxing vacation filled with fun and exploration.

If you are looking for a Belize itinerary that works for families, this guide combines island adventures, incredible wildlife, Mayan history, and relaxed beach days, all without the stress of hauling around big suitcases.

Belize is one of the easiest countries to explore with kids. English is the official language, transportation is simple (and fun on the cayes), distances are manageable, and many of the best experiences happen outdoors. From swimming in warm Caribbean water to exploring ancient Mayan ruins hidden in the jungle, Belize offers the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.

For our family, Belize was exactly what we look for in a destination: easy logistics, unforgettable experiences, and the ability to pack everything we needed into carry-on backpacks.

No oversized suitcases. No waiting at baggage claim. No dragging luggage across ferry docks, sandy roads, or trying to squeeze oversized bags into a golf cart.

In Belize, travelling light is not just easier, it makes the entire journey smoother.

Why Belize Is Perfect for Family Travel

Belize is one of those rare destinations where you can experience beaches, islands, rainforest, and history without spending your entire vacation moving from place to place.

Families love Belize because:

  • English is the official language.
  • The islands are easy to explore.
  • Golf carts replace cars on Ambergris Caye.
  • Kids can safely enjoy beaches and shallow water.
  • There are incredible wildlife experiences.
  • Adventure does not require bringing lots of gear.
  • Travel days can be kept short and simple.

The biggest lesson we have learned from travelling with our kid is that less stuff equals more freedom.

Travelling carry-on only means:

  • Easier airport transfers.
  • Faster arrival and departure days.
  • Less to organize.
  • More flexibility.

Best Time to Visit Belize With Kids

Belize is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what type of experience your family is looking for.

December to April: The Popular Season

The dry season is considered the best weather period in Belize. Days are sunny, humidity is lower, and rainfall is less frequent.

Benefits:

  • Great beach weather.
  • Ideal conditions for snorkeling and diving.
  • Comfortable temperatures.

Things to Consider:

  • More visitors.
  • Higher hotel prices.
  • Popular restaurants and tours can fill quickly.

If you are travelling during Christmas, March Break, or Easter holidays, booking accommodations and activities ahead of time is recommended.

May to November: Fewer Crowds and Better Value

The rainy season runs from June through November, but this should not automatically rule out a visit.

Rain showers are often short, and many days still have plenty of sunshine. The biggest advantage is that you experience a much quieter side of Belize.

We visited Belize in November, and it was one of our favourite times to travel.

The weather was beautiful, but the crowds had disappeared.

We practically had the resort to ourselves. There were no issues finding pool chairs, often had the pool to ourselves most days, no long waits at restaurants in San Pedro, and booking activities was easy and provided flexibility.

For families who prefer a slower pace, planning in the moment, November was ideal:

  • Warm weather.
  • Fewer tourists.
  • Quieter beaches.
  • More availability at resorts.
  • Easier restaurant reservations.
  • A more relaxed travel experience.

Tip: If your family can travel outside peak school holidays, November is a hidden gem. You get many of the benefits of high season without the crowds or cost.

Getting to Ambergris Caye

Most international travellers arrive through:

Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE)

From the airport, your next stop is Ambergris Caye, where you will spend the first part of your trip.

There are two main options.

Option 1: Hopper Flight to Ambergris Caye (Recommended With Kids)

The easiest way to reach Ambergris Caye is by taking a small local flight from Belize City, booking with either Maya Air or Tropic Air. (Note: Our hotel booked our hopper flight for us.)

The flight takes approximately 15 minutes and offers incredible views of the Belize Barrier Reef.

For families, this is our preferred option because it keeps the travel day simple.

Why families love the hopper flight:

  • Fast.
  • Super easy with kids.
  • No long transfers.
  • Incredible views.
  • Less time carrying luggage.

Travel Light Tip: Hopper Flights Have Limited Space

One of the biggest reasons we recommend travelling carry-on only in Belize is the way you move around once you arrive.

The small aircraft used for hopper flights have limited storage space. Large suitcases may not always fit easily, and oversized luggage can create extra hassle.

Travelling with lightweight backpacks makes the entire experience easier:

  • Your bags stay with you between the transfers which equals no lost luggage.
  • Easier boarding.
  • Simple and fast transfers between destinations.
  • Less stress moving through airports and docks.

The flight itself is part of the adventure. Looking down over the islands and the Belize Barrier Reef from a small plane is an unforgettable experience.

Option 2: Water Taxi to Ambergris Caye

The budget-friendly option is taking a taxi from the airport to Belize City and catching the ferry.

The ferry is comfortable and scenic, but it creates a longer travel day.

If you are travelling with younger children, the hopper flight may be worth the additional cost.

Travel Light Tip: Belize Transportation Is Not Built for Large Suitcases

Belize is a destination where travelling light makes a noticeable difference.

Many travellers assume a large rolling suitcase will make vacation easier, but Belize is not designed around large luggage.

Your transportation may include:

  • Small hopper planes.
  • Ferries.
  • Golf carts.
  • Sandy roads.
  • Small docks.

Once you arrive on Ambergris Caye, many travellers get around by golf cart.

If you are arranging your own transportation instead of having a hotel pickup, there may not be much room for large suitcases especially when travelling as a family.

Not every hotel offers a pickup service, which can create a challenge if you have overpacked.

A family with several large suitcases may find themselves trying to fit everything into a golf cart while navigating island roads.

A carry-on backpack makes everything easier:

  • Fits on small aircrafts.
  • Fits on ferries.
  • Fits in golf carts.
  • Easy to carry over sand.
  • Easier when changing accommodations.

Tip: Belize rewards travellers who pack light. When your transportation includes planes, boats, and golf carts, a lightweight backpack gives you more freedom.

Where We Stayed: Coco Beach Resort, Ambergris Caye

For our stay on Ambergris Caye, we chose Coco Beach Resort, located north of San Pedro.

It was the perfect fit for our family because it offered the comfort of a resort while still allowing us to experience the island.

What we loved:

  • Spacious condo style accommodations.
  • Family-friendly atmosphere.
  • Multiple pools.
  • Beach access.
  • Relaxed environment.
  • Easy access to San Pedro by golf cart.

One of our favourite things about staying slightly north of San Pedro was the slower pace.

After exploring all day, it was nice to return somewhere quiet where the kids could swim, relax, and recharge.

Because we visited in November, the resort was incredibly peaceful. It felt like we had the resort almost to ourselves, which made travelling with kids even easier.

Tip: Staying outside San Pedro gives you more space and a quieter experience. Rent a golf cart and make exploring the island part of the adventure.

Carlo & Ernie’s Runway Bar

A unique experience beside the airport runway. My son loved watching planes take off while enjoying a relaxed meal.

Tacos Del Diosa

A must-stop for taco lovers. Easy, casual, and delicious. This was our favourite mexican restaurant.

The Truck Stop

A family favourite with multiple food options, games, a pool, and plenty of space for kids. We all got to pick our own meal.

The Truck Stop Restaurant in San Pedro, Belize

3C3

If you are a skier, you’ll love the atmosphere of this restaurant. The entire restaurant is themed after alpine skiing. There are chair lifts for chairs, skies as hooks and railings. It also has an amazing view of the coastline as it sits at the end of a dock.

Day 1: Explore San Pedro

After arriving on Ambergris Caye, do not over-plan your first day.

Settle into your hotel, grab lunch, and start exploring San Pedro.

San Pedro is colorful, relaxed, and easy to navigate. Golf carts replace cars, streets are filled with local shops and restaurants, and the Caribbean atmosphere immediately slows you down.

Things to do:

  • Walk along the waterfront.
  • Explore local shops.
  • Enjoy fresh seafood (recommend Caramba).
  • Grab a treat from the Belize Chocolate Company
  • Rent a golf cart.
  • Watch the sunset.

For kids, simply riding around the island in a golf cart becomes part of the experience.

Day 2: Spend the Day at Secret Beach

Secret Beach is one of Ambergris Caye’s most popular destinations, and it is easy to see why.

The calm, shallow water makes it a great place for families. Kids can swim, float, and play while parents relax nearby.

Spend the day enjoying:

  • Clear Caribbean water.
  • Paddleboarding.
  • Swimming.
  • Beach swings.
  • Fresh ceviche.
  • Tropical drinks.
  • Sunset views.

Pack light for the day:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Swimsuits.
  • Rash guards.
  • Water bottles.
  • Small dry bag.

You do not need much to enjoy Belize.

Day 3: Day Trip to Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is the perfect family day trip from Ambergris Caye.

The island’s motto is “Go Slow,” and it perfectly captures the feeling of Belize.

There are no cars, streets are sandy, and everything moves at a relaxed pace.

Spend your day:

Visit The Split

The Split is the island’s famous swimming area and a great place for families.

Kids can swim in clear water while parents relax nearby.

Visit Stingray Beach

See rays swimming close to shore and feed tropical fish.

Explore the Island

Rent bikes, grab ice cream, explore local shops, and enjoy fresh seafood or BBQ. Definitely recommend grabbing a bite from one of the many food vendors setup along the beach.

Don’t Overlook Local Food in Belize

One of our favourite meals was not at a restaurant.

While exploring Caye Caulker, we bought lunch from a BBQ vendor on the side of a sandy street.

We grabbed a table on the beach and enjoyed simple BBQ chicken and rice.

Nothing fancy.

Just delicious food, a beautiful view, and an authentic Belize experience.

Return to Ambergris Caye in the evening.

Tip: Some of the best travel memories come from the simplest moments. Don’t overlook local food vendors.

Day 4: Snorkel the Belize Barrier Reef (The Experience You Cannot Miss)

If there is one experience you should prioritize on your Belize itinerary, it is snorkeling the Belize Barrier Reef.

Belize is home to the second-largest barrier reef system in the world, and the snorkeling here is considered some of the best on the planet. The combination of crystal-clear Caribbean water, vibrant coral, tropical fish, rays, and nurse sharks makes this an unforgettable family adventure.

There are different locations for different types of diving that families can choose from so it is well suited for every age to have an amazing adventure on the water.

Belize offers an incredible reef experience on a much smaller scale with the advantage of being easier to access and explore which is perfect for families.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley

The most popular snorkeling trip from Ambergris Caye is a visit to:

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Hol Chan means “little channel” in Mayan, and this protected marine area is one of the best places in Belize to see marine life.

Expect to see:

  • Colourful tropical fish.
  • Coral formations.
  • Sea turtles.
  • Rays.
  • Incredible underwater scenery.

Shark Ray Alley

Despite the name, this experience is much less intimidating than it sounds.

Here you can swim alongside gentle nurse sharks and stingrays in shallow, clear water. It is one of those rare wildlife experiences where kids can safely observe incredible marine life up close.

Day 5 (Optional): Choose Your Adventure

Option 1: Visit Mayan Ruins

Great family-friendly options:

Xunantunich

  • Easy to explore.
  • Incredible views.
  • Kids can climb the ruins.

Altun Ha

  • Great for younger kids.
  • Easy walking.

Lamanai

  • Includes a jungle boat ride.

Option 2: Experience the Jungle

Spend a few days inland for:

  • Waterfalls.
  • Wildlife.
  • Cave tubing.
  • Jungle adventures.
  • Eco resorts.

Days 5–7: Slow Down and Enjoy Belize

The best part about Belize is that you do not need a packed schedule.

Spend your final days:

  • Swimming.
  • Exploring.
  • Trying local food.
  • Watching sunsets.
  • Enjoying time together.

The memories your kids will remember are often the simplest ones:

  • Feeding fish from a dock.
  • Riding a golf cart around the island.
  • Swimming in warm Caribbean water.
  • Finding a hidden beach.

Carry-On Packing List for Belize With Kids

One of the reasons we loved Belize was how easy it was to pack light.

Our family travelled with carry-on backpacks instead of large suitcases.

You really only need:

Clothing

  • 3–4 lightweight outfits.
  • Swimsuit.
  • Rash guard.
  • Lightweight sweater.
  • Comfortable walking shoes.
  • Sandals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Belize a good destination for families?

Yes. Belize is easy to navigate, English-speaking, and offers many activities that work well for kids.

Is 7 days enough for Belize?

Yes. A week is enough to experience Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, and either Mayan ruins or the jungle.

Do you need a car in Belize?

No. On Ambergris Caye, golf carts are the easiest way to get around.

Can you travel Belize with only carry-on luggage?

Absolutely. Warm weather, casual clothing, and simple transportation make Belize ideal for carry-on-only family travel.

What is the best month to visit Belize with kids?

November is a great option for families looking for warm weather, fewer crowds, and a more relaxed experience before the busy winter season begins.

Is Snorkeling in Belize Kid-Friendly?

Yes, but it depends on your child’s swimming ability and comfort level in open water.

Most snorkeling tours recommend children be at least 5 years old, but we would personally recommend this experience for children who are:

  • Around 6+ years old.
  • Comfortable swimming independently.
  • Confident wearing a mask and snorkel.
  • Comfortable being on a boat for several hours.
  • Able to follow safety instructions.

A child who is nervous in the water may not enjoy the experience, even though the snorkeling itself is beginner-friendly.

Three Black Sheep Tip: Bring a rash guard, reef-safe sunscreen, and a full-face snorkel mask only if your child is already comfortable using one. Practice snorkeling in a pool before your trip so the first experience is exciting—not stressful.

Do you need bug spray in Belize?

Yes, definitely bring bug spray. This is one item we were very glad we packed.

While Belize is an incredible destination for families, the bugs can be intense, especially around beaches, jungle areas, after rain, and during early morning or evening hours.

We found bug spray was essential and used it regularly throughout our trip, mostly in the evenings. Having it with us meant we could enjoy outdoor dinners, exploring, and relaxing by the water without constantly worrying about mosquito bites.

Our recommendations:

  • Pack insect repellent in your carry-on.
  • Choose a repellent with DEET or Picaridin for better protection.
  • Apply before heading outside, especially around sunset.
  • Consider lightweight long-sleeve shirts for evenings.
  • Pack after-bite treatment just in case.

Three Black Sheep Tip: Bug spray is one of those small items that takes up almost no space in your backpack but can make a huge difference in your comfort. Add it to your Belize packing list—you will be happy you did.

Do you need a golf cart to get around Ambergris Caye?

Yes. A golf cart is the easiest and most practical way to explore Ambergris Caye.

Unlike many Caribbean islands where you can walk everywhere or rely on taxis, Ambergris Caye is spread out. If you want to explore beyond your resort, visit Secret Beach, try different restaurants, or see more of the island, you will want a golf cart.

For our family, renting a golf cart was part of the adventure. It gave us the freedom to explore at our own pace and made getting around with kids simple.

A golf cart allows you to easily visit:

  • San Pedro town.
  • Secret Beach.
  • Local restaurants.
  • Beach bars.
  • Shops and markets.
  • Other areas around the island.

Most hotels and resorts can help arrange a golf cart rental for you. We recommend asking your accommodation before arrival or shortly after check-in, especially during busier travel periods.

Three Black Sheep Tip: A golf cart becomes your family’s transportation, sightseeing vehicle, and part of the Belize experience. Kids will love riding around the island, but remember that storage space is limited—another reason carry-on backpacks work so well in Belize.

If you are arriving without a hotel transfer, keep luggage size in mind. Golf carts do not have much storage space, and large suitcases can quickly become difficult to manage. Travelling light makes the entire island experience easier.

Can you book tours and excursions through your hotel in Belize?

Yes. One of the easiest parts of travelling in Belize is that many tours and excursions can be booked directly through your hotel or resort.

During our stay, we found this to be the simplest option. The resort was able to help arrange activities, answer questions, and recommend reputable local operators without us needing to spend time researching and comparing every option ourselves.

Many popular experiences can be arranged through your accommodation, including:

  • Snorkeling trips to Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley.
  • Caye Caulker day trips.
  • Fishing excursions.
  • Island tours.
  • Mainland adventures.
  • Mayan ruin tours.
  • Jungle activities.

The prices were reasonable compared to booking independently, and the convenience was worth it especially when travelling with kids.

Three Black Sheep Tip: When travelling as a family, saving time and reducing logistics is often worth more than finding the absolute lowest price. Let your hotel help coordinate transportation, pickup times, and tour details so you can focus on enjoying the experience.
